WAKSMAN SELMAN: (1888-1973) Russian-born American Inventor. A Biochemist and Microbiologist best-known for discovering the streptomycin and several antibiotics. Awarded with the Nobel Prize in Physiology or medicine in 1952. A good content T.L.S., `Selman A. Waksman´, one page, folio, n.p., 4th November 1962. Waksman responds beneath three lengthy autograph questions in French, sent by a collector referring to Alfred Nobel and to Nobel awards. To the second question ''On receiving the Nobel prize, what thoughts did you have regarding the founder of this award?'', Waksman responding `My thoughts were that this was the best possible use that funds accumulated in a single lifetime should be distributed to those who made the greatest contribution to the development of present-day science, which served for the benefit of the human race.´ To the third question ''Despite the material satisfaction, what moral satisfaction have you experienced?'', and Waksman answers `I felt extremely happy that my life work has served towards the saving of human lives and toward the improvement of human health and that this has been given final recognition by so important a prize.´ VG
