LE VERRIER URBAIN: (1811-1877) French Astronomer and Mathematician. Best known for predicting the existence and position of Neptune using only mathematics. His discovery is widely regarded as a validation of celestial mechanics. A very fine A.L.S., `U.J. Le Verrier´, a large signature at the base, one page, 4to, n.p., n.d., [1858], to a General, in French. Le Verrier recommends Monsieur Philippe Daverdoing to his correspondent, and states in part `Monsieur the General, you did kindly write to me time ago that the time of Mr. Daverdoing would come. I would deeply wish that you think the moment has arrived now, after the death of the councillors of the Oran prefecture. I would not recommend Mr. Daverdoing if I did not know that he is a clever man, constant in his work and full of energy..´ Le Verrier further refers to the title and honours given to him by the Governor of Algeria.
