DU CHAILLU PAUL: (1831-1903) French-American Traveler, Zoologist, and Anthropologist. First modern European outsider to confirm the existence of gorillas, and later the Pygmy of central Africa. A.L.S., P.B. Du Chaillu, three pages, 8vo, London, 1st October 1862, to an unidentified lady, in French. Du Chaillu responds to his correspondent´s letters which he has just received both at the same time on his return to London, and states in part `Having been out of London for more than two weeks, your letter has given me the first news on Mr Gerard´s duel. I will try to know the reasons why the duel took place. You know, as well as I do, that this kind of matters are very delicate to ask about..´ further saying `Unfortunately I am obliged to leave London tomorrow morning as I have to attend the Scientific Congress in Cambridge..´ and concludes referring again to Gérard stating `I will try to meet Monsieur Jules Gérard and learn what happened and will let you know, because according to your letter it is in his interest that you know what happened!´ A letter of interesting content and good association. VG £100-150 Jules Gérard (1817-1864) French Military Officer and Explorer, a famous lion hunter.
