ABERDEEN EARL OF: (1784-1860) British Prime Minister 1852-55. A very interesting L.S., `Sir, most obedient, Aberdeen´, one page, 4to, [London], Foreign Office, 30th April 1843, to Edmund Molyneux. The printed circular letter bears at the heading the title ''Circular Slave Trade nº 1'', and states `I herewith transmit to you for your information a Copy of a Treaty concluded at Santiago on the 19th of January 1839, and of an additional and explanatory Convention concluded at Santiago on the 7th of August 1841, between Her Majesty and the Republick [sic] of Chile for the Abolition of the Slave Trade. The Ratification of this Treaty and Convention were exchanged at Santiago on the 6th of August 1842,´ Signed by Lord Aberdeen in his capacity as Secretary of Foreign Affairs. Hand addressed to the verso, sent by `Foreign Office…1843 - Lord Aberdeen -Circular Slave Trade..´ Folded. Extremely small overall, minor age wear. VG £800-1200 The British Parliament approved in 1833 the Slavery Abolition Act, ending with slavery throughout the British Empire, with the exceptions of the territories in the possession of the East India Company, Ceylon and Saint Helena. These exceptions would be eliminated in 1843, and this same year the British government concluded treaties with Chile, Mexico, Uruguay and Bolivia.
