PASHA DJEMAL: (1872-1922) Also called Jamal Basha. Ottoman military Leader, Minister of the Navy, known as one of the ''Three Pashas'' or dictators that ruled the Ottoman Empire during WWI and during the Armenian, Greek and Assyrian genocides. Assassinated. L.S., Djemal, a bold black ink signature, one page, 4to, Chania, Crete, 28th August 1898, to vessel Captain and Commander of the English navy forces, in French. Pasha, in his capacity as Commander of the Ottoman troops, invites his correspondent to an evening celebration, in his home, the 31st of August, to celebrate the anniversary of the accession to throne of His Majesty the Sultan. Pasha extends his invitation to all English navy officers. Small stain to the lower right edge, otherwise VG £150-200 In 1919 a military court in Turkey accused Djemal of persecuting Arab subjects of the Empire, and sentenced him to death in absentia. Djemal went to Central Asia, where he worked on modernization of the Afghan army. Djemal travelled to Russia after the Bolshevik Revolution to act as a military liaison officer to negotiate over Afghanistan with the Soviets. He was assassinated on 21st July 1922 by three Armenians as part of Operation Nemesis, in retribution for his role in the Armenian Genocide.
