SARGENT JOHN SINGER: (1856-1925) American artist, considered the leading portrait painter of his generation. A.L.S., with his initials J. S. S., on one side of his correspondence card, Tite Street, Chelsea, n.d. ('Friday'), to Philip [Sassoon]. Sargent writes, in full, 'I am returning your "Duchesse d'Orleans" for I had an old copy of it here, and I am aghast yours might get lost'. About EX
