Zola states `Not being able to assist to tonight´s performance, I have the honour to return it to you enclosed..´ Written at the base in another hand "Debut de M.elle Bartet in Ruy Blas´. With blank integral leaf. Very small crease to the upper left corner, otherwise G to VG
The performance Zola refers to was Victor Hugo´s drama Ruy Blas (1838). Considered by many critics as the best drama by Hugo. Zola applauded Hugo´s work, his verses and language, but criticized the message and background´s philosophy and message sent to youth.
Jeanne Julie Regnault (1854-1941) known as Julia Bartet. French stage Actress. Bartet performed the Queen´s role at the Comédie Française in May 1880.
