PASTEUR LOUIS: (1822-1895) French chemist and microbiologist, renowned for his discoveries of the principles of vaccination and pasteurisation. An interesting series of autograph notes, unsigned, in the hand of Pasteur, on one side of a correspondence card, Rue d'Ulm, Paris, 4th September 1886, in French. The notes relate to a programme of experiments associated with research into tuberculosis and state, in part, '….inoculate rabbits and guinea pigs by pulmonary consumption….then every day inoculate s.l.p. ['sous le peau'; 'under the skin'] half of them healthy marrow from rabbits, the others nothing. What effect? At the same time inoculate a rabbit and a guinea pig with the same marrow by weighing them every day at the same time. What is the effect produced? Marrow tests of various kinds; pig, calf….test of marrow from animals refractory to consumption…..What happens to guinea pigs, to rabbits, by inoculations of marrow in an exaggerated quantity?'
