‘I’m sorry the Jews are to have Palestine….’
[PALESTINE]: FELL GODFREY (1872-1955) British diplomat and Colonial administrator. An interesting A.L.S., G Fell, two pages, 4to, Oriental Club, Hanover Square, London, 9th May 1920, to E. P. Hartshorn. Fell announces that the photographs have arrived and continues 'We had a most comfortable journey on, barring a bit of a gale in the Mediterranean. We were very well looked after at Marseilles & again at Calais. Since we got here, we have been very busy, meeting every day & working from 10 till 7. We've finished most of the contentious matters now, & as Lord Esher has gone to Scotland for 3 weeks we hope to finish the rest of our work & have the report ready to sign early in June', further remarking 'I see they've had plenty of raids across the Jordan & some fighting. I'm sorry the Jews are to have Palestine, as from what I saw of them they seemed quite unsuitable to develop the agricultural resources of the country'. Fell concludes by thanking his correspondent for having looked after him during the tour and hopes that they will meet again soon.
