NECKER JACQUES: (1732-1804) Swiss Banker & Finance Minister 1777-81 under Louis XVI. Some of his decisions have been later considered as critical in creating social conditions which contributed to the outbreak of the French Revolution. L.S., Necker, one page, folio, Paris, 22nd July 1777, to M. de Limay, in French. Necker informs his correspondent that he has decided to replace M. Devoglie because of his age by M. Desvaux, pleasing with this appointment his correspondent and stating `I have decided so, and in the meantime and if an inspection was taking place, you will be in charge of your municipality [Tours], and also in charge of those from Orleans, Poitiers…´ Necker further requests to take as a priority in his new department the works on bridges and carriageways and those of sea ports. Small overall age wear, otherwise VG £100-150 Jean Cadet de Limay (1732-1802) would be later appointed in 1780 general inspector of bridges and carriageways, and during the revolution he will be in charge of the Orleans channels. Jean Baptiste de Voglie (1724-1777) a renowned French bridge engineer. He worked on the Saumur existing bridge.
