GIOVANNI JOSE: (1923-2004) his real name being Joseph Damiani, French-Corsican writer and film-maker. Damiani was a former collaborationist and criminal, one time was sentenced to death. An interesting and lengthy A.L.S., José, eight pages, folio, 7th September 1961, to Auguste Le Breton, in French. Accompanied by the envelope with Giovanni´s name to the verso in his hand. The French film-maker states in part `The Cinema is incomprehensible… Today I have started with the dialogues…It is a topic I have explained to Ventura, to Belmondo and Jean Becker, and they do agree to go ahead. Becker will start working on it in 1962. And Ventura and Jean Paul have booked a date in Spring for me..´ further referring to other works and his opinion and says `It is too soon to shout that it is a disaster. We must wait and avoid judgements on what will be the future of the film..´ A letter of good content. Accompanied by a typed synopsis of the Du Riffifi à Tokyo, the film he refers to in the present letter.
