DON CAMILLO: FERNANDEL (1903-1971) Fernand Cantandin. French Actor. An excellent signed and inscribed 5 x 7 photograph by Fernandel, the original Sam Levin image depicting the French actor in a smiling head and shoulders pose. Signed in bold black fountain pen ink (`For Paul Maes, Cordially, Fernandel´), also dated 1957 in his hand. Also including GINO CERVI (1901-1974) Italian Actor. Scarce signed and inscribed 5 x 7 photograph, the Sam Levin image showing Cervi in formal head and shoulders pose. Inscribed to André Journiaux. Both photographs bearing to the verso a Sam Levin photographer ink stamp. VG, 2 £150-200 Don Camillo were a series of five French-Italian comedy films, between 1952 and 1965, starring Fernandel as the Italian priest Don Camillo and Gino Cervi as the communist Mayor of their rural town. Don Camillo is a character created by the Italian writer and journalist Giovanni Guareschi, whose name, and some of his character, is based on an actual Roman Catholic priest, a WWII partisan and detainee at the concentration camps of Dachau and Mauthausen named Don Camillo Valota (1912-1998). André Jouniaux (1924-2013), French author of the song `La Chanson de Catherine´ which was performed by Edith Piaf and later by Juliette Gréco.
