[LOUIS XVI]: (1754-1793) King of France and Navarre 1774-1791, King of the French 1791-92. The only King of France to have been executed. D.S., Louis, by his secretary, one page, folio, Paris, 2nd May 1787, to the administrators of the Hospital General of Paris, in French. The partially printed document being a ''Lettre de Cachet'', a document which was used under Louis XVI to intern beggars and alienated people in hospitals which in fact were quite often prisons. The letter instructs to intern Jean Frederic and Joseph Fraisier, stating `..and keep them interned until a new order is given..´. An autograph annotation confirms that they were interned the 28th of May, adding the word `by force´. Countersigned by the Baron de Breteuil. Folded. With edges very slightly trimmed. VG £250-350 Louis Auguste le Tonnelier de Breteuil (1730-1807), ministre de la Maison du Roi. The Hospital Général of Paris was not a building used for medical assistance but a place where mendicants were interned, and widely considered a prison.[]
