GAMBETTA LEON: (1838-1882) French Minister of interior and foreign affairs and President of the chamber of deputies. A good A.L.S., Leon Gambetta, one page, 4to, Tours, 11th November 1870, to Deputy Scheurer-Kestner´s widow. The partially printed document bears the heading of the National Defense Government, and states `the generous gift of 6.000 francs which you have offered to the Republic to help its government in the huge work of the national defense and the deliverance of the homeland..´ further saying `the invasion reduce us to such painful needs´. The letter is written during the French-German war, when the National Defense Government was created on 4th September 1870 until 12th January 1871, with Gambetta as Minister of war.
