GIELGUD JOHN: (1904-2000) English actor, Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actor in 1981 for his role as Hobson in Arthur. Vintage signed sepia 8 x 10 photograph of the young actor seated in a three-quarter length profile pose in costume as William Shakespeare's Prince Hamlet. Signed by Gielgud in fountain pen ink to a clear area of the background, adding his character name and the year, 1936, in his hand beneath his signature. The present photograph dates from the period when Gielgud made his stage debut on Broadway; from September 1936 to February 1937 the actor played Hamlet in North America, opening in Toronto before moving to New York and Boston. Regarded by many as the finest Hamlet of his era, Gielgud performed in the role over five hundred times between 1930 and 1945.
