CHATEAUBRIAND FRANÇOIS-RENÉ DE: (1768-1848) French Writer, Politician and Historian. He is considered the founder of Romanticism in French literature. A.L., one page, 8vo, n.p., n.d., to Duchess of Duras, in French. Chateaubriand states `I cannot meet you any more. The Mess has prevented me of coming this morning. I saw your daughter there; this made me think that M. de T[almont] was a little better. Tomorrow morning I will still be working..´ With blank address leaf, with very small area of paper loss and remnants of a former seal. Folded. G £200-300

Claire de Kersaint (1777-1828) Duchess of Duras. French novelist. Best known for her novel Ourika, 1823, an early work on racial and sexual equality. Close friend of Chateaubriand. Antoine Philippe de la Trémoille (1765-1794) Prince of Talmont. Husband of Felicie Duras, daughter of the Duchess. The Prince was guillotined at the early age of 28.
