FRERON LOUIS-MARIE STANISLAS: (1754-1802) French Politician, member of the National Convention. Freron is remembered as the infamous appointed to quell the Toulon rebellion. Failing as suitor for the hand of Pauline Bonaparte in 1801, he was sent by Napoleon to Saint Domingue where he died from yellow fever. An interesting and unusual A.L.S., `Freron´, one page, 4to, n.p., 4th August 1781, in French. Freron forwards important information to his correspondent in order to help a family, stating `..a family which did not deserve at all the cruel fate others expect..´, further stating `The only way to get a benefit from my own situation and the crisis in which I am involved, would be consolidating my journal with the guarantee of being protected. Two words from the most eminent person of the Kingdom would be enough to disconcert the infamous intentions of my persecutors.´ Two additional lines written to the verso. Small overall age wear, and a very small hole to the centre fold and tear to the edge not affecting the text or signature. G £200-300
