BILLAUD-VARENNE JACQUES NICOLAS: (1756-1819) French Revolutionary, often considered a key architect of the period known as The Reign of Terror. Nicknamed ''Le Tigre'' (''The Tiger''). Billaud-Varenne was a member of the Committee of Public Safety, later sentenced to deportation to French Guiana after his involvement in the 12th Germinal insurrection (1st April 1795). A good L.S., `Billaud Varenne´, one page, 4to, Paris, 14th August 1796, to the President of the Temple Parisian section, in French. The document bears the printed heading of the ''Municipality of Paris'' above a Parisian revolutionary vignette, Billaud Varenne stating `The National Assembly has issued Monsieur le President a decree ordering without delays the formation of a Martial Court, the people are waiting for such institution, and they want it promptly..´ further saying `.. Therefore I kindly ask you to make the necessary to proceed during the day of today with the election of the members who will compose the tribunal.´ Billaud Varenne concludes stating `The Conseil General needs to fulfil the commitment with the people creating such Tribunal before midnight.´ With blank address leaf bearing a red wax seal in two parts due to the opening of the letter.
