MILL JOHN STUART: (1806-1873) British Philosopher and Political Economist. A.L.S., J. S. Mill, three pages, 8vo, Blackheath Park, 6th July 1869, to Monsieur G. Wyrneboff, in French, on his blind embossed monogrammed stationery. Mill writes, in part, 'I would have been very happy to profit by Madame Conrady's do flattering proposition, but I have already received two similar propositions from Russian ladies, and I had accepted one of them, who was highly recommended to me. I hope that the translation will be of a nature to satisfy Madame Conrady and the other ladies who are associated with the work of the enfranchisement of women….' VG £300-400 One of the most influential thinkers in the history of classical liberalism, Mill was the author of the early feminist work The Subjection of Women which was published in 1869, the same year as the present letter. In the essay Mill attempts to make a case for perfect equality and discusses the role of women in marriage and how it needed to be changed, arguing that the oppression of women was one of the few remaining relics from ancient times.
