CECIL ROBERT: (1864-1958) 1st Viscount Cecil of Chelwood. British Lawyer, Politician & Diplomat, one of the architects of the League of Nations. Nobel Peace Prize winner, 1937. Small selection of T.Ls.S., and A.L.S. (1), Robert Cecil, R.C., six pages (total), 4to, London, February 1916 - February 1917, all to [Ralph] Harwood, War Trade Department, on the blind embossed stationery of the Foreign Office. Cecil informs his correspondent of his gratitude for supplying statistical information useful to the Foreign Office, including, 'I am greatly obliged to you for your letter containing your comments on Admiral Jellicoe's letter. I realise the great amount of work that a statistical search of this description must give you…' 11th February 1916; 'These are exceedingly useful returns… I think Copper should include wire & I should like the figures about Nitrate of Soda in future issues. Could you let me have a statement as to the way in which home consumption figures have been arrived at', 3rd March 1916; 'I am very much obliged to you for sending me the press cutting respecting the memoranda we issued in reply to the attacks by the ''Daily Mail''. I agree with you that as a rule we do not wish to give neutral countries the idea that we are entirely satisfied with their conduct, but in the specific case of the ''Daily Mail'' attack I think our joinder was justified and did good', Cecil adding the holograph postscript, 'The truth is that in a democratic country you cannot afford to 'lose face' & so must defend yourself if attacked', 28th September 1916; 'Very many thanks for the Statistical Notes which you have sent for my use in any statement I may have to make to the Imperial Conference', 26th February 1917. Together with Edward Wise (1885-1933) British Economist, Civil Servant and Politician. T.L.S., E. F. Wise, two pages, 4to, London, 18th August 1917, to [Ralph] Harwood, on the printed stationery of the Ministry of Food. Wise informs his correspondent, in part, 'I quite realize… that the remarkable experience you have had during the last two or three years is of a specialised kind… It was because after speaking to you I thought you would possibly take this view, that I suggested you should tell me before you spoke to Lord Robert Cecil. I do not quite know what may be the developments of the work here in connection with the Blockade…' Also including Ralph Harwood (1883-1951), Financial Secretary to George V and Governor, London School of Economics and Political Science. A.L.S., R.E. Harwood, one page, 4to, London, 13th May 1916, to Sir Alexander [King], on the printed stationery of the War Trade Statistical Department. Harwood informs his correspondent, in part, 'I will see that copies of the monthly & weekly tables are sent to you in future… I enclose the April copy (just arrived from the printers) now (no longer present)'. With a holograph reply from Alexander King to the foot of the page, stating, 'Thanks. How could you think that anything of yours would not be of interest?'
