MACMILLAN HAROLD: (1894-1986) British Prime Minister 1957-63. A.L.S., Harold Macmillan, five pages, 8vo, Cadogan Place, London, 2nd March 1937, to Pauline. Macmillan states that he purposefully delayed writing his letter of condolence to his correspondent as he felt that she would have been overwhelmed with letters and continues 'It is quite impossible to say how one feels, & I'm afraid that letters of sympathy aren't much good anyway. But I feel I must just tell you how much I personally feel the loss & how we all feel for you', further praising the deceased's qualities ('He had the power of arising (?) the confidence & affection of younger ones - I think by the unaffected simplicity & nobility of his character') and also recalling a famous speech by Asquith about Alfred Lyttelton 'in which he said that A.L. was what every father hoped his son to be. The same could be said of Bertie and I personally can never forget his unfailing kindness & sympathy', as well as commenting 'One knows one's true friends not in times of success, but in moments of difficulty or failure, and judged by the first, he was the most true & loyal of friends'.
