FAUQUIER FRANCIS: (1703-1768) Royal Governor of the colony of Virginia 1758-68, in what would later be the United States. Rare and attractive D.S., Fran Fauquier, twice, with holograph `Sworn into office before me´, one page, oblong 4to, Williamsburg, 11th November, in the second year of his Majesty´s Reign, 1761, to John Curetons. The partially printed document bears the printed heading ''Francis Fauquier, His Majesty´s Lieutenant-Governour, and Commander in chief of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia'' being an appointment stating in part `By Virtue of the Power and Authority to me given, as Commander in Chief of this Colony, I do hereby constitute and appoint you the said John Curetons to be assistant Inspector of Tobacco, at the Public Warehouse established at Blandford in the County of Prince George according to an act of Assembly, passed the 16th day of April 1761…´ The document bears two red wax seals at the base, each one with a crowned paper seal attached. Folded, with few small tears to the edges, and area of paper loss to the upper right corner. F £200-300 Fauquier was a close friend of Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826). During the American Revolution, Jefferson represented Virginia in the Congress that adopted the Declaration, drafted the law for religious freedom as a Virginia legislator, and served as the second Governor of Virginia from 1779 to 1781, during the American Revolutionary War. It has been reported that Fauquier often hosted parties where a young Jefferson played his violin and drank imported wines. Fauquier County is named after him.
