Manuscript, Messianic Calculations, by Rabbi Refael HaLevi of Hanover - Germany, 18th Century
Handwritten leaf, lengthy and detailed messianic calculations for the year 5543 (1782-1783). [Germany, 18th century].
Neat Ashkenazic cursive and square script, typical of the 18th century. Presumably written before 1783.
The name of the author is not mentioned in the present manuscript, however a collection of single leaves in the Berlin library (no. 1267) includes a leaf with the same messianic calculations, attributed in the title and introduction to R. Refael HaLevi of Hanover.
The present leaf contains references to Christianity which were censored from the Berlin manuscript. There are several additional textual differences (minor) between the two manuscripts.
R. Refael HaLevi of Hanover (1685-1779), prominent mathematician and astronomer, disciple of Leibnitz. Author of Luchot HaIbur and Techunat HaShamayim.
[1] leaf. 35X26.5 cm. Fair-good condition. Stains. Folding marks. Open tears in several places (primarily to folds), affecting text, repaired with paper.
