Photograph Album in Olive Wood Binding - British Soldier in Palestine, 1937-1938 - The Arab Revolt
Photograph album belonging to a British soldier who served in Palestine. [Ca. 1937-1938].
About 240 black-and-white photographs, arranged in an album and titled on its leaves in handwriting (English). Most were photographed in Palestine; some depict various destructive acts that occurred in the course of the Arab Revolt.
Photographs include:
· Photographs of a vehicle that hit a mine on its way to Tulkarm (1938) and the questioning of Arab suspects following the event; additional case of a mine that exploded and caused the death of a British commander; photographs taken following an attack on the British railway; an overturned vehicle in Ramallah, and more.
· Photographs of soldiers in Jerusalem and various sites in the city - Damascus Gate, Jaffa Gate, worshipers at the Western Wall, the Tower of David, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Dome of the Rock, the YMCA building, the British military cemetery, the King David Hotel and more.
· Photographs from a ceremony held in honor of the coronation of George VI as King of the United Kingdom (May 1937).
· Photograph of the Trans-Jordan Frontier Force.
· Photographs from various cities and sites in the country: Rachel's Tomb, Gethsemane, Bethlehem, Lod (including a number of photographs of planes at the airport), Jaffa, an Arab wedding at Jenin, Tsrifin, Haifa (view towards Bat Galim from Mount Carmel, the Bat Galim Casino, the Haifa port, a ship of the Royal Navy in the port, the beach and more), Netanya, Rishon LeZion (visit to a brewery and more), and others.
· Photographs from Malta, Gibraltar and Port Said.
· Photographs of the soldier's family.
The album is bound in a fine olive wood binding, with "Bezalel"-style decorations.
Photograph size varies, approx. 4X6.5 to 12X17.5 cm. Most of the photographs are approx. 6X8.5 cm. Album: 21X29 cm. Good overall condition. Most tissue guards missing.
