Parashat Derachim – the Copy of Rabbi Natan Adler, with His Handwritten Signature
Sefer Parashat Derachim by the author of "Mishneh la'Melech". Constantinople, 1728. First edition.
On the upper part of the title page, a signature: "Natan the son of the late Shimon Adler Katz", which is the signature of Rabbi Natan Adler, which is known from other books.
Another writer added a handwritten inscription before the signature: "Belongs to the Rabbinical…"
On leaf 42, glosses by a different writer.
Enclosed is confirmation by Rabbi Yitzchak Yeshaya Weiss regarding the identification of the signature as the handwriting of Rabbi Natan Adler.
Rabbi Natan Ha'Cohen Adler (1741-1800) was one of the geniuses of his generation and a prominent kabbalah scholar. He headed the yeshiva he had established in his house in Frankfurt and was the primary rabbi of Rabbi Moshe Sofer author of the "Chatam Sofer" – who refers to him frequently in his Halachic and Kabbalistic books. It is told that Rabbi Adler said of himself that he is forbidden to write his Torah novellae since writing was permitted only so as not to forget, while he forgets nothing of his doctrine!
He was known as a miracle-worker. The Chatam Sofer, in his eulogy for him, said about him that all Torah gates were open to him and that when there was a fire in Frankfurt, the fire did not reach his house (Derashot Chatam Sofer pp. 371-373).
Condition: Good-Fair. Detached front binding. The title page and the margins of the leaves are flawed.
