Our February auction is composed of material from Philadelphia, Bucks County, and Chester County collections and estates. Highlights include English and Continental furniture such as a Charles II Japanned cabinet on stand, a flame birch Northern European armoire and a William IV Pollard oak cellarette. Asian pieces feature an assembled pair of Wucai porcelain jars, two very finely carved Chinese joss stick holders, and a pair of Japanese export lacquer knife boxes. Fine art includes a 17th century Dutch portrait of a woman and works by Amelia Pelaez, Eusebio Sempere, William Langson Lathrop, Walter Granville-Smith, Andre Cottavoz, Giovanni and Antonio Martino, Elizabeth Quale O'Neill Verner and Andre Gisson. Of special note is a large collection of American and International gold and silver coins, rare early maps, a collection of art and decorative objects related to Cuba and Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson, first edition and first printing.

Tall Case Clock, Thomas Hughes, London
A George III tall case clock movement, Thomas Hughes, London, circa 1765; the associated case is late 19th century. The twelve-inch arched brass dial, with silvered chapter ring having Roman hours and Arabic minutes, with subsidiary seconds dial, date aperture and engraved oval name plate inscribed "Thos. Hughes / London." to the matte center, the arch with "Strike / Silent" dial within cast spandrels, having a twin train eight day five pillar brass movement striking on a bell, the hood with brass finials and a fret carved cornice, above a trunk flanked with brass mounted stop-fluted quarter columns, ending with a raised panel box base, raised on claw-and-ball feet.

Dimensions:Height 97 3/4in; width 20in; depth 10 1/2in.

Provenance:From a Bucks County collection.
Condition: The movement and case are together by association. The movement is mid 18th century, the case is 19th century. The case in overall condition good condition, retaining an old finish, typical dings, dents and Surface scratches. The movement appears to be in generally good condition overall. The dial with typical marks, wear, rubbing and toning to metalwork. At the time condition report was written, the clock's movement would stay running for a period of time before eventually stopping. With pendulum, two large lead weights, two case keys and winding crank. We cannot guarantee the functionality and completeness of the clock's movement.
