HALACHIC STATUS OF A SHOCHET WHO DOES NOT OBSERVE LAWS OF SHABBOS! 4-PAGE RESPONSUM BY RABBI AHRON DAVID SELNER, RABBI OF LAURENCE AND BOSTON, ADDRESSED TO RABBI YAAKOV BENTZION MENDELSON, RABBI IN NEW YORK. 1925.

Rabbi Ahron David Selner, Rabbi of Laurence and Boston; long responsum dated 1925, addressed to Rabbi Yaakov Bentzion Mendelson, Rabbi in New York, expressing shock that he had allowed a Shochet who does not observe Shabbos laws to carry out ritual slaughter, contrary to the ruling of the Shulchan Aruch and other leading rabbinic authorities. Rabbi Selner strongly decries the lenient rulings of American and other rabbis on a number of contemporary halachic issues and strongly criticizes Rabbi Mendelson’s ruling on this case. ‘I would not have believed that you could have issued a ruling like this!’

Rabbi Ahron David Selner (b. 1873), studied at the Yeshiva of Mir and the Kollel Perushim of Kovna. Emigrated to America in 1916, and served as Rabbi a number of communities including Laurence and Boston. Author of Mateh Aharon.

Rabbi Yaakov Bentzion Mendelson (1876-1941), born in Kreutzburg, Rabbi in Leeds, Gateshead (1904), and Glasgow (1906), before emigrating to New York in 1915 where he served as Rabbi of Beis Medrash Hagadol. Author of Shaarei Tzion, Sefer Hatzayad, Medrash Yaavetz and Mishnas Yaavetz.
