A RARE JAPANESE PORCELAIN VASE, MIYAGAWA KOZAN, C1900-1910. In the form of two polar bears in a cave with thick drips of white glazed icicles pooling into translucent glaze at the tips in places leading into turquoise streams over the brown glazed rocks. Two-character mark to base in double ring. Makuzu Kozan (1842-1916). 22.2cm tall. 15.9cm diam. Ref: See an almost identical vase in the Victoria and Albert Museum, described as inspired by contemporaneous works sold, at very high prices, by the Royal Copenhagen Manufactory. Provenance: Property of a local lady, inherited from her grandmother. Presumed to be gifted to the vendor's grandmother for her wedding in 1910. Three icicle tips damaged. One icicle with repair.
