Constantin Emilé Meunier, relief picture plate "Le Mineur"
circa 1900, signed, stamped on the reverse: "Avec les hommages Édouard Taymans" (was commissioned by the well-known coal merchant Édouard Taymans as a gift for a client and is traded in various designs and materials), stucco, relief depiction of an emaciated miner with helmet and wedge-shaped tool in front of a slag heap and smoking vent, good condition, in original gift box, dimensions of this 18.5 x 23.5 x 3.5 cm. Artist info: Belgian sculptor and painter (1831 Etterbeek to 1905 Ixelles), studied at the Academy in Brussels, was a pupil of his brother Jean-Baptiste, worked with Charles Auguste Fraikin, founded the Société Libre des Beaux-Arts in Brussels with like-minded people in 1868, first worked mainly as a painter, exhibited at the Salon in Ghent in 1880 and in that year turned mainly to the depiction of working people, from 1896 he gained importance in Paris and turned mainly to sculpture, 1887-1896 professor at the Academie Louvain, belonged to the freemasons of the lodge Les Amis Philanthropes in Brussels, exhibited at the art exhibition in Dresden in 1997 together with his friend Henry van de Velde, today the Museé Meunier, which administers his works, is located in his (self-designed) house.
