Bownas, Swiss Alpine Landscape near Bristen
View from a hill past the waterfall of the Bristenbach and vineyards to the village of Amsteg (today part of the municipality of Silenen), with the historic Platti bridge and church in the narrow valley bottom of the Reuss at the confluence of the Kärstelenbach, overlooked by the imposing mountain massif of the Chli Windgällen and the Groß Windgällen in the Glarus Alps in the canton of Uri, a similar motif appeared as a lithograph in H. Runge "Die Schweiz in Original-Ansichten ihrer interessantesten Gegenden. Taken from nature and engraved in steel by the most excellent artists of our time" by G. G. Lange Darmstadt 1861-66, here erroneously labelled as "Amstag", finely captured with a pointed brush, romantically exaggerated landscape painting, watercolour and pencil on paper, indistinctly signed lower right "B. Bownas" or "R. Bownas" and dated "1879", old label with partly indistinct English inscription "Bristen (view from) near Amstag ..." on the reverse. [Eng: Bei Amstag [meaning "Amsteg"] (view from) Bristen ...]", slightly faded and yellowed, framed behind glass in gold border, folding dimensions approx. 62 x 96 cm.
