Friedrich Preller the Elder, Italian Landscape
View from a slight hill into a rocky hilly landscape with some groups of trees under a dramatically cloudy sky, in the foreground probably Camillus caring for a sick person and grazing donkey, large-format work, charcoal, partly wiped on paper and doubled on canvas as well as stretched on stretcher, probably made during the artist's second trip to Italy in 1859-61, ligatured monogram "FP" at lower left, numerous tears, slight traces of water and losses in the margins, conspicuous retouching in the area of the sky, yellowed, framed without glass, folding dimensions approx. 111 x 167,5 cm. Artist's info: Johann Christian Ernst Friedrich Preller the Elder, German painter and graphic artist. Painter and graphic artist (1804 Eisenach to 1878 Weimar), 1804 the family moved to Weimar, 1814-21 attended the Weimar drawing school, transferred Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's cloud drawings to the pure, 1821-23 studied at the academy in Dresden, Goethe made sure that he received several scholarships from Grand Duke Karl August, 1824 travelled with the duke to the Netherlands and here became a student at the academy in Antwerp, 1827-31 study trip to Italy, 1832 Preller drew Johann Wolfgang von Goethe on his deathbed, 1840 study trip to Norway, from 1844 teaching post at the princely drawing school in Weimar and appointment as professor and court painter, 1859-61 further study trip to Italy, from 1869 member of the Prussian Academy, Source: Thieme-Becker and Wikipedia.
