VIEIRA LUSITANO, Francisco Vieira de Matos (1699-1783) Study for the Portrait of Cardinal D. Henrique of Portugal (c. 1750) Drawing in blood on paper Unsigned Dim. approx.: 15 x 20 cm. Paper yellowed and lacking. Framed (defects). The final work is in the Church of São Vicente de Fora, Lisbon. The painting has symbolic references to the Cardinal's brief reign as King of Portugal and the consequent loss of independence: the statue of Lusitania with dried thistles on the pedestal, the spear broken and the head out of frame; on the table, a book whose title is Portug. Regnum, a crown, and a rabbit.
