Of. italiana, óleo s/cobre, 54,5 x 71,5 cm.
17/18th century Italian workshop "The Return of Jephthe" or "The daughter of Jephthe" Oil on copper Unsigned Dim. approx.: 54.5 x 71.5 cm. Restorations. Framed (defects). The scene represents according to the biblical quotation: Judges 11.30-35, translation of The Jerusalem Bible: "And Jephthah made a vow to Yahweh: 'If you deliver the Ammonites into my hand, whoever goes out first from the door of my house to come to meet me when I come back victorious in the battle against the Ammonites, he will belong to Yahweh, and I will offer him as a burnt offering." Jephthah passed over to the Ammonites to attack them, and the Ammonites were thus subdued by the children of Israel. // When Jephthah returned When Masfa came to his house, behold, his daughter came out to meet him dancing to the sound of tambourines. She was his only daughter. Besides her, he had neither son nor daughter. As soon as he saw her, he tore his clothes and cried: Alas! Alas! my daughter! You have prostrated me in anguish! You are among those who make me unhappy! I made a promise to Yahweh and I cannot go back!"
