Yellowed, stained paper with creases and tears. Framed (defects). This work is a version of the Vieira Lusitano oil found in the MNAA, inv. No. 1694 and similar to the drawing found in London, Witt Collection, Courtauld Institute, inv 44. According to the MNAA catalogue, ”Vieira Lusitano (1699-1783), the drawing”, p. 149: ”... In the collection of the Courtauld Institute another version of ”Repouso na Fuga para o Egipto” (inv. 44) seems much earlier, although with some similarities. In the London drawing, Vieira seems closer to the type of drawing of the figures he made for the ”Sagrada Família” of Mafra in 1730 (see in particular the head of Saint Joseph), being the most Italian composition, both for the depth of field that it lends to the scenery, and for the attitudes of the characters, represented from a classical point of view.”
