NIKIAS SKAPINAKIS (1931-2020) "The Fathers" Oil on canvas Verse signed, 1950s. XX Dim. approx.: 99.8 x 81.2 cm. Changes in the pictorial layer. This work appears in the author's catalog "Retrospective of Portraits 1955-1974", curated by Nikias Skapinakis, Raquel Henriques da SIlva and Pedro Lapa, MNAC, Lisbon 1996, cat. 11. Framed. According to this catalogue: "It is a double portrait, in this case, of a middle-aged couple, which precedes the group portraits and also constitutes a first commission from the author (of the two or three recorded throughout his portraitist activity) // The flowers assume, as later in the portrait of Natália Correia (cat. 14), a significant intervention, at the same time that they introduce a still-life notation in the painting of the portrait. // The writer José Cardoso Pires , who had realized the psychological truthfulness of the marital relationship, intended to reproduce it in "Revista Almanaque" but the author did not agree. (...) ".
