Esrim V’Arbah – Bound In Original Binding, Amsterdam 1724. A Rare Edition
A rare edition of the Tanach, printed by Shlomo Proops, Amsterdam 1724. Printed with the approbation of R. Shlomo Ailon, who served as the Chief Rabbi of Amsterdam for the Sephardic community. Entirely complete on all 24 books of Tanach, with three separate title pages dividing each part. With two main title pages, the first being an illustrated copper-engraved plate, depicting Moshe and Aharon, the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai, and the Temple in Jerusalem.
Bound in a magnificent leather binding, which was commissioned exclusively for a wealthy individual, probably a member of the Sephardic Jewish community of Amsterdam. On the front cover it reads: “Premio Di Abi Ietomim” – Gift of Father of Orphans (!). The back cover features the date – “Anno 5524”, which means that it was gifted in the year 1764.
A very rare edition. To the best of our knowledge, a complete copy has never been offered for sale at auction.
In overall good condition, with occasional signs of wear. All edges gilt. Original binding with gilt inscriptions; small holes in place of previous clasps are seen. Minor repairs to title page; pp. 54 partly damaged, with loss of text.
Page size: 20cm.
