A French ivory mirror - Dieppe, 19th Century
intirely made up of ivory (Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797 o Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758), possibly by a prisoner of war, the bevelled oval plate within a shaped surround applied with carved feathers, cupids, lions, coats of arms, lyre-centered base and the top with the inscription MONTIOYE ST DENYS; mounted on a wooden frames. "Montjoie St Denis" is the battle cry of the French army. This was probably carved in Dieppe and dates to the third quarter of the 19th Century. (for similar examples see Christopher Payne, 19th Century European Furniture, London, 1981, p. 141, pls. 351 and 352). 70 cm high x 50 cm wide. Item condition grading: **** quite good (minor losses to the carving). Ce.S.Ar. Certificate of antiquity (pre-1947).
