A Chinese ivory carving of Bodhisattva - Qing dynasty, 19th Century

elephant ivory (Elephas maximus Linnaeus, 1758 or Loxodonta africana Blumenbach, 1797) carving depicting bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara-Guānyīn in its form of Sahasrabujia (Sanskrit, Chinese 千手 觀音 Qiānshǒu Guānyīn) with a thousand arms, seated in dhyanasana. The meaning of this representation pertains to the role of mahākaruṇā (Sanskrit, cin. 大悲 dàbēi, Great compassion) represented by this bodhisattva ready to aid the suffering multitudes. Height 19,2 cm, with wooden base 24.2 cm. Sculpture weight 625 gr. Item condition grading: **** good (minor losses). Ce.S.Ar. Certificate of antiquity (pre-1947).
