- An ebony family tree, from the African Makonde Tribe. This detailed ebony sculpture was made with traditional iron tools and stands on a wooden plinth.
Tanzania (East Africa) and Northern Mozambique are famous worldwide for wood sculpture generally known as Makonde Art. This long tradition in wood carving typically depicts animals and human beings etc. Nowadays the more popular 'Shetani' style depicts 'devils'. The Family tree reverts back to the tradition of togetherness, showing men and women, tools and food.
