Ferdinand Chaigneau

Le Petit Troupeau, 1860
Etching and drypoint, 33 x 51,5 cm
Le Petit Troupeau is a fine original etching and drypoint realized in 1860 by the French artist Ferdinand Chaigneau.
Published by A. Cadart and Luquet, this original print represents a pastoral scene: a shepherd with his flock in a florid countryside, realized with a sure touch and deep blacks.
Title and iscriptions concerning the publishing house and artist are etched on plate below the image "Le Petit Tropeau/ Paris, Publié par A. Cadart and Luquet, Éditeurs, 79, Rue Richelieu". On the lower left margin: "Chaigneau sculp."

Jean-Ferdinand Chaigneau
Jean-Ferdinand Chaigneau (Bordeaux, 1830 - Barbizon, 1906) was a French painter, famous for his historical paintings, and for his landscape and animal subject matters. He contributed to the Universal Exhibition in Paris in 1885, exhibiting a painting titled Marais dans les Landes.
Together with Théodore Rousseau and Jean-François Millet, he was one of the pioneers of the Barbizon School.
In very good conditions: the area of the etching is perfect, while there are traces of oxydations and a usual yellowing of the paper beyond the marginal line of the matrix.
