PAUL V: (1552-1621) Pope of the Catholic Church and Ruler of the Papal States 1605-21. Born Camillo Borghese. Paul V supported Galileo Galilei´s discoveries and protected him. Extremely rare L.S., `Il Card[ina]le Borghese´, beneath few holograph words in his hand `Come fr[at]ello Aff[ezionatissi]mo´, (''Your affectionate brother''), one page, 4to, Rome, 20th March 1604, to Monsignor Amalteo, Venice, in Italian. Paul V, in his capacity as Cardinal Vicar of Rome, explains to his correspondent that he has received his letter referring to the Archbishop, `Il supplicato avviso, che V.[ostra] S.[ignoria] mi da della disperata salute di Mons.[ign] Arci-Vesc.[ov]o di Zara..´ which gives testimony of `ha servito principalmente per confirmazione della sua buona volonta verso di me..´, (''has served mostly to confirm the willingness towards my person..''), and which he deeply appreciates. Paul V further again states ''Desidereiche la colatione di quella chiesa cadessi nella persona di V.I., et io venendo il caso, non manchero di ricordare a N.S. il merito suo..´. A year after the present letter was signed, Pope Leo XI passed away and Camillo Borghese was elected Pope Paul V. With address leaf.
