A GILT LACQUER SWEET-BOX, KOSHIBAKO
Japan, Edo period, 17th century
Rectangular section, the fine decoration on the external surface divided in two registers marked by a zig-zagging line (katami-gawari), on one side a bamboo curtain grid with chrysanthemum leaves, on the other a chessboard ground with mauve leaves, metal handle and silk lace, wooden box.
8 x 11 x 5,5 cm
Provenance: Italian private collection.
The katami-gawari decorative motif is typical of lacquer production between the 16th and 17th centuries. Due to its extreme lightness, it can be assumed that the structure of this box is not made of wood.
