"Saint Anne with Virgin and Child". Carved, polychromed, gilded and silvered sculpture. Hispanic Flemish School, Gothic, 15th century.

Saint Anne is most frequently depicted with the Virgin and Child in medieval imagery.
Worship of Saint Anne developed rather late in the west, and it was from the 15th century that it extended throughout Europe with great fervour.
This sculpture, enriched with marvellous polychroming, places Saint Anne in the centre of the composition, dressed in rich dresses and a gilded and silvered tunic. Her face shows the signs of her advanced age and is framed with a veil. The Virgin Mary stands to her right, and is depicted with long, wavy hair worn loose, as an expression of her youthful virginity, she wears rich clothing. A bunch of grapes hangs from her right hand, which she proffers to her son, the Christ Child, while in the left hand she holds other fruits.
