Exceptionally rare letter by the most famous (or infamous)

Borgia Pope of the Renaissance

ALEXANDER VI: (1431-1503) Pope of the Catholic Church 1492-1503. Born Rodrigo de Borja, into a Spanish prominent Borgia family under the Crown of Aragon. Nephew of Pope Callixtus III 1455-1458. Elected Pope on the year of the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus, he confirmed the rights of the Spanish crown in the New World. Exceptionally rare letter by the most famous or infamous Borgia Pope of the Renaissance. L.S., `Fiat motu p[ro]prio. R´, and below again `Fiat. R´, being a Papal Motu Proprio, signed with his initial “R” of Rodrigo, as Popes use to do, using their real initial name, one page, large 11 x 11.5, (27.5cm x 29.5cm), given in Rome, at Saint Peter, 5th November 1501, to Reverend Cardinal Alexandrinus, in Latin. By this document, Alexander VI, in his capacity as Pope, signs the present Motu Proprio `Motu proprio, Dilecto filio nostro Johannes Antonio, Sanctorum nerei et Achillei presbitero Cardinale Canonicatum et praebendam ecclesie Novaricensi..´, granting financial privileges related to the Diocese of Novara, near Milan, to Cardinal Alexandrinus, having passed away the relatives and entitled former owners. An extremely rare document signed by the last 15th century Pope. Very small age wear and toning with only bottom edge very slightly trimmed, otherwise G to VG

Alexander VI is widely regarded as one of the most controversial Popes of the Renaissance. His pontificate was characterized for libertinism, acknowledging himself fathering several children by his mistresses. On the other hand, successors of Alexandre VI have described him as one of the most outstanding Popes.

A Motu Proprio is a will to grant certain privileges.

Giovanni Antonio Sangiorgio (1439/42-1509) also known as Cardinal Alexandrinus was a Jurist and Diplomat, close to Pope Alexander.
