NEWMAN JOHN HENRY: (1801-1890) English theologian, a Catholic priest and cardinal who was canonised as a saint in the Catholic Church in 2019. A.L.S., John H Card. Newman, three pages, small 8vo, Birmingham, 28th September 1881, to Mrs. Combs. Newman states that he is concerned to hear of his correspondent's serious illness and adds that it was kind of her to make an effort to write to him, further writing 'I fancied you knew about the Lenthalls. I had much esteem and kind feeling for Elizabeth. The last time I was inside St. Mary's was at her funeral. Her sister had the misfortune of a bad husband, who drove her out of her senses; but she recovered them, and for ten years before her death passed her time in peace'. VG
