The most controversial piece of memorabilia from the most controversial bout in the history of boxing.
The genuine torn glove worn by Cassius Clay in the 1963 fight against Henry cooper, believed to have been cut with a pair of scissors by his then trainer Angelo Dundee ( who admitted this some 20 years later)
The glove was immediately sent back to Baileys glove manufacturer in Glastonbury after the fight and stayed in their safe until the factory closed down a few decades later.
In the late eighties the MD of Baileys Richard Mayers met with Henry Cooper and asked him to sign this piece of history, which he did .
The glove was split between the rounds 4 and 5 just after Clay received a stunning blow from ''enry’s ammer'' and Clay was later heard to have said that Cooper hit him so hard that his ancestors in Africa felt it .
Changing the gloves gave Clay at least 3-5 minutes recuperation time to allow him to go on and finish off to cut over Coopers right eye which eventually lead to Coopers corner throwing in the towel towards the end of round 5 .
The glove comes with a hand written letter from the MD of Baileys describing its provenance together with MD’s cv, the deeds to the factory and original Mirrorpic photo of the round 4 knock out .
