R. Shemaiah di Modena composed the introduction to this work and relates that it is entitled "Bnei Shmuel," as the author - (who was named after his grandfather, Samuel di Modena, the Maharshda"m), had no children of his own, hence his legacy is the present work of Torah scholarship.===The afterword recounts the author's losses due to civil unrest in Salonika in 1614. See Y. Mehlman, Genuzoth Sepharim, p. 92.===See also M. J. Heller, The Seventeenth Century Hebrew Book, Vol. I, pp. 296-7.
