Letter of Recommendation by Rabbi Moshe Clears for Rabbi Shemaya Luria, a Leading Activist of Agudat Yisrael – Sent to Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld, the Rabbi of the Jerusalemite Agudat Yisrael
A letter of recommendation handwritten and signed by Rabbi Moshe Clears, the rabbi of Tiberius, to his friend Rabbi Yosef Chaim Sonnenfeld the rabbi of Ha'Edah Ha'Charedit of Jerusalem. In the letter, Rabbi Moshe Clears asks Rabbi Sonnenfeld to help the young Rabbi Shemaya Luria to receive an apartment at the "Batei Machaseh" of the Old City of Jerusalem (thus becoming Rabbi Sonnenfeld's neighbor).
Rabbi Shmuel Shemaya Luria (1905-1989) was born in Tiberius to his father Rabbi Zvi Luria. He grew up with the leading members of the Slonim Hassidim of Tiberius. After his marriage, he was one of the central activists of Agudat Yisrael and at a certain stage, indeed lived in Jerusalem.
The letter is written on the official stationery of the "Or Torah" yeshiva of Tiberius, which was headed by Rabbi Clears. Rabbi Clears' stamp appears on the margins.
