Rare, Postcard From Jewish Prisoner in Stalag VIII-B POW Camp in Lamsdorf to His Wife in Tel-Zur.

During the Second World War between Italy and Greece, some 2,200 volunteers from the community joined the British forces, most of whom were organized as part of nine excavation companies.

On April 29, 1941, the troops, who were in Greece, with the rest of the British army, surrendered to the German army and were taken prisoner.
Of the approximately 9,000 British soldiers captured, 1,383 were Jewish volunteers. Several hundred Israel-born soldiers fled to Crete and fought there in the battle for Crete. With the fall of the island by the Germans, these soldiers also fell into captivity.
Under the influence of the ICRC and the British government, discrimination between Jewish and other prisoners was avoided, and the Germans treated Jewish prisoners under the rules of the Third Geneva Convention. In contrast, there were disclosures of discriminatory treatment between British officers and soldiers towards their comrades - Jewish POWs from Palestine. For their part, the Jewish prisoners organized themselves in the prison camps, managed to maintain cohesion, and even maintained an Israeli-Jewish character, especially the celebration of the Jewish Holidays.
