**’ Modeled in the form of a mother and her son riding a camel. Marked Bazzaro 54 cm high * A similar item sold at Bonham’s sale no. 18180, lot no. 111 for $ 7,440. **Ernesto Bazzaro was a member of Italian sculptors influenced by the stile liberta of Giuseppe Grandi and his circle, known as the Scapigliatura. This anti-academic spirit is apparent in his painterly style, the unfinished edges, and lack of detail so unconventional for sculptors of his time. He trained at the Brera Academy under Ambrogio Borghi, who also worked with orientalist themes. In the Caravan, also referred to as Flight into Egypt was modelled in 1892 and numbers amongst just a handful of small scale works which the artist executed in bronze. Most of his works are monumental in size and can be seen all over Europe.
